The Gate of Felicity and the Third Court of Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, Türkiye, in morning light

Topkapı Palace

Topkapı Palace was the Ottoman court for nearly four centuries, and it is the one great sight in Istanbul the Ministry of Culture does not run: it belongs to Millî Saraylar, the presidential palaces authority, which prices it in lira and takes no ministry pass. This page covers the hours, the closed day, the courts and the Harem; the ticket lines are on Topkapı Palace tickets. The city-wide ticket comparison sits on the Istanbul city guide homepage.

Quick answer The closed day, the ticket, and what the Harem adds

Topkapı closes every Tuesday and its box office shuts at 17:00. The combined ticket for foreign visitors is ₺2,750 (about $57) and covers the palace, the Harem and Hagia Irene; the Harem alone is ₺1,050.

Four courts, and what is in each

The palace is not a building but a walled town that steps inward, from a public park to the sultan's private rooms. Walking it in order is the visit.

First Court

Free to walk, and most people do it without realising: the outer park behind the Imperial Gate, with Hagia Irene standing in it. Hagia Irene is a sixth-century church that never became a mosque, which is why its interior is bare brick and plaster rather than tile — and why it is on the combined ticket rather than free with the park.

Second Court

The administrative heart: the Imperial Council chamber where the viziers met beneath the sultan's grilled window, and the palace kitchens, whose ten domed chimneys held the Chinese porcelain collection. This is where the ticket check happens, at the Gate of Salutation.

Third Court and the Treasury

Through the Gate of Felicity, into the court no ordinary subject entered. The Treasury holds the Topkapı Dagger and the Spoonmaker's Diamond; the Chamber of the Sacred Relics holds objects attributed to the Prophet, and is a place of prayer as much as a display. Expect the tightest crowding of the visit here.

The Harem and the Fourth Court

The Harem is a separate ticket line even inside the combined ticket, and it is the part people most often skip and then regret: three hundred rooms of İznik tile, the sultan's private hamam, the courtyard of the concubines. The Fourth Court beyond it is the reward — terraces, pavilions and the view down over the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn meeting.

Getting in, and the Tuesday problem

The palace is seven minutes' walk from the Hagia Sophia, up past the fountain of Ahmed III. The T1 tram stops at Sultanahmet or Gülhane, either one about the same distance on a ₺46.20 İstanbulkart ride.

The box office closes at 17:00, and because the Harem is at the far end of the circuit, arriving after about 15:00 means choosing between the Treasury and the Harem rather than doing both. The palace closes all day Tuesday, and on the first day of each of the two religious holidays, Ramazan Bayramı and Kurban Bayramı. Those dates move each year with the lunar calendar, so check before fixing a Tuesday-adjacent plan.

Topkapı Palace questions

What day is Topkapı Palace closed?

Tuesday, all day, every week. It also closes on the first day of Ramazan Bayramı and the first day of Kurban Bayramı, dates that move each year. The box office shuts at 17:00 on open days.

Is the Harem included in the Topkapı ticket?

In the combined ticket, yes: palace, Harem and Hagia Irene together are ₺2,750 for foreign visitors. The Harem is also sold alone at ₺1,050. It is worth the extra: the tilework there is the best in the palace. The ticket lines set out each combination.

Does the Museum Pass İstanbul work at Topkapı?

No. Topkapı belongs to Millî Saraylar, not the Ministry of Culture, so neither the €105 Museum Pass nor Müzekart is accepted — and the ministry prints separately that Müzekart never covers the Harem or Hagia Irene.

How long do you need at Topkapı Palace?

The palace publishes no figure. Our routing is three hours: an hour for the Treasury and the Third Court, an hour for the Harem, and an hour for the kitchens, the Fourth Court terraces and the walk between them. Arriving after 15:00 usually means dropping one of the three.

Can I buy Topkapı tickets at the gate?

Yes, until 17:00, by card. In summer the gate queue and the separate Harem queue can each run past twenty minutes, which is what a fast-track tour removes.

What is special about Topkapı Palace?

It is not a single building but a walled court that steps inward through four courtyards, from a public park to the sultan's private rooms — with the Treasury, the Chamber of the Sacred Relics and the Harem inside it.

Is there a dress code at Topkapı Palace?

The palace itself has no dress code, but the Chamber of the Sacred Relics is a place of prayer where modest dress and quiet are expected, and Hagia Irene is a historic church interior.

Does anyone live in Topkapı Palace?

No. The court moved to Dolmabahçe in 1856 and Topkapı has been a museum since 1924; it is now administered by Millî Saraylar.
