What do I need to know before visiting Istanbul?
Buy an İstanbulkart; the big sights belong to three different authorities and share no pass; Topkapı closes Tuesdays, Dolmabahçe Mondays and the Grand Bazaar Sundays; and mosques are free but pause around five daily prayers.
How many days do you need in Istanbul?
Three nights covers the old city, one palace, the bazaars and a crossing to the Asian side. The three-day route walks it.
Is Istanbul expensive?
Transport and food are cheap; the monument tickets are not. A normal sightseeing day came to about $61 per person on our reading. What it costs.
Do I need a visa?
That depends on your nationality and changes; check with your own consulate rather than a travel site. This guide does not publish visa rules because it cannot verify them for every passport.
How far does $100 go in Turkey?

What are the do's and don'ts in Istanbul?
Do buy an İstanbulkart before your second journey; do cover shoulders, knees and hair at mosque doors and take your shoes off; do check the day's prayer times before planning a mosque visit; do pay by card, since museum entrances stopped taking cash on 1 August 2025. Don't pick up a dropped shoe-shine brush, don't accept a stranger's invitation to a specific bar, and don't get into a taxi whose meter is 'broken'.
