A Roman provincial capital preserved almost intact in outline: the Curetes Street running downhill between colonnades, the two-storey facade of the Library of Celsus, the 25,000-seat theatre where Paul is said to have preached, latrines, brothel, agora and gate.
The Terrace Houses, under a modern roof halfway down the street, are a separate ticket and the part most people skip and should not: painted rooms and mosaic floors of wealthy families, excavated in situ and displayed on walkways above the digs.
What is not there: the Temple of Artemis, one of the seven wonders, of which a single re-erected column stands in a field near Selçuk.
