What the peninsula holds
The 1915 landings and the eight months that followed left a landscape of cemeteries, trench lines and memorials spread over a few square kilometres of scrub and pine above the Aegean. Standard itineraries take in Anzac Cove, where the Australian and New Zealand landings went ashore in the wrong place; Lone Pine and Chunuk Bair, the two high points fought over through August; the 57th Regiment memorial on the Turkish side; and several Commonwealth war graves.
What makes it land is the scale of the ground: the opposing trenches at some points are metres apart, and the whole battlefield is walkable in an afternoon. Nothing charges admission; the cost of the trip is the eight hours in a vehicle.
