Dolmabahçe Palace
Dolmabahce Palace is the palace the Ottoman court moved into when Topkapı began to look medieval: 1856, European in plan, with a four-tonne Bohemian chandelier in a ceremonial hall and the room where Atatürk died kept as it was. The combined ticket splits the palace into parts that feel like different buildings.
The Selamlık
The state half: the ceremonial staircase with its crystal balustrade, the reception rooms, and the Ceremonial Hall under a 36-metre dome with the chandelier said to weigh four and a half tonnes. Entry is in timed groups accompanied by staff, which is why the queue moves in pulses rather than continuously.
The Harem
The private apartments, plainer and more domestic, and the reason many people come: the bedroom where Atatürk died on 10 November 1938, its clock stopped at 09:05. Quieter than the Selamlık because most groups have already spent their patience.
The Painting Museum
In the Crown Prince's quarters along the shore: nineteenth-century Ottoman and European canvases, almost always empty, and included in the same ticket. The best of the three for a hot afternoon.
Mondays, and the 17:00 wall
Two constraints shape the visit. The palace is closed all day Monday — Topkapı takes Tuesday, so the two never leave you sightless on the same day, but a Monday-Tuesday city break needs planning. And the box office closes at 17:00, earlier than the light does in summer.
Because the Selamlık moves in accompanied groups, arriving at 16:30 does not mean walking straight in. Allow two hours from the gate for all three sections; arrive before 11:00 or after 15:00 for the shorter waits. The palace also closes on the first days of the two religious holidays, dates that shift with the lunar calendar.
