From the Airports to the City
Getting from Istanbul airport to city center depends on which airport you landed at: IST sits on the European side and SAW on the Asian, an hour and a half apart in traffic. Havaist's own site publishes routes, live timetables and a bus tracker, and lists card payment — Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, Amex, Troy, Diners, Discover and JCB — but no fare table on the pages reachable from its homepage, checked 2 September 2026.
Istanbul Airport (IST), the European side
IST is a long way out — about 40 km from Sultanahmet — and the airport is big enough that reaching the metro takes ten minutes of walking on its own. The M11 runs into the city as far as Gayrettepe, where you change for the M2 south toward Şişhane and Yenikapı; for Sultanahmet the neat version is M11 to Kâğıthane or Gayrettepe, M2 to Yenikapı, then Marmaray one stop to Sirkeci and the T1 tram or a ten-minute walk.
That is two or three fares and about an hour and a quarter with the walking. The Havaist coaches trade the changes for a longer sit: they run to Taksim, Sultanahmet and Kadıköy among other stops, take card payment, and have their own tracker so you can see the bus coming.
Sabiha Gökçen (SAW), the Asian side
SAW is smaller and closer to the Asian shore. The M4 metro runs from the terminal toward Kadıköy, and from Kadıköy you either take a ferry across to Eminönü or Karaköy — twenty minutes, one fare, and the best arrival in the city — or Marmaray under the strait if the weather is against you.
If your hotel is in Sultanahmet, budget an hour and a half from the gate. If your hotel is in Kadıköy or Üsküdar, SAW is the better airport by a wide margin and the transfer is trivial.
When a taxi is actually the right answer
After midnight, when the metro has stopped and the coaches thin out. With three or more people and luggage, when the fare divides. And when your flight lands during the two hours either side of the evening rush, in which case the taxi is not faster but it is at least seated.
