What you actually pass
Leaving Eminönü the European shore gives you Dolmabahçe's long white facade, then Çırağan, then Ortaköy's little mosque directly under the first bridge — the photograph everyone takes. Beyond it the shores narrow at Rumeli Hisarı, the fortress Mehmed II threw up in four months in 1452 to cut the strait, facing Anadolu Hisarı across the water.
The wooden houses along both shores are yalı, summer mansions built at the waterline, and the older ones lean and sag in a way no restoration is allowed to fix. The full public route runs up to Anadolu Kavağı near the Black Sea mouth and back and takes most of a day, with a couple of hours ashore for lunch and the climb to the ruined castle above the village. It is timetabled rather than frequent, so check departures before committing the day.
The cheaper trick is the ordinary commuter crossing at the right hour: Karaköy to Üsküdar at sunset costs one fare, takes twenty minutes, and puts the old-city skyline in front of you the whole way with a glass of tea in your hand. Ferries are transport here, not an excursion — that is the thing visitors take longest to believe.
