İstiklal Street and what is off it
The street itself is a pedestrian mile with a red tram on it and a global chain every fifty metres; the interest is in the turnings. The passages — Çiçek Pasajı, Atlas, Hazzopulo — are nineteenth-century arcades holding meyhanes and small shops. Balık Pazarı, the fish-market lane, sells mussels, tripe soup and rakı at standing counters.
Walk south and the district becomes Galata: steeper, older, with the tower at the bottom of it. Walk north and it becomes Taksim, which is a transport junction with a square attached.
Evenings, honestly
Asmalımescit and the lanes around Nevizade are the meyhane quarter: long tables, cold meze, grilled fish, rakı and, later, live music. Prices are printed; if they are not, ask before sitting down.
The thing to avoid is the bar you are walked to by a stranger — that specific setup, with an inflated bill and company you did not ask for, is described on safety and scams. Choosing your own place from a busy street solves it entirely.
